Yesterday Lynne and I met Dr Charles Mosse for follow up after surgery, which was six weeks ago. Dr Mosse was very pleased with my recovery; he emphasized again that the surgery was a technical success. We told him about the pneumonia episode last week. He said that was a setback, but not uncommon for this type of surgery. He was really quite happy with the X rays of my chest taken last week. I am recovering well from the pneumonia, and am now on a 10 day course of Rulide 300 and Cefaclor 375 antibiotics.
Dr Mosse said that about a third of my stomach had been removed and about three quarters of my oesophagus. It would be several months before things settled down, and I should make a follow up visit in about 6 months time.
Meanwhile I am into the second week of my post operative ECF chemotherapy, which is uncomfortable but tolerable. My mouth lips and skin seem dry, sore and wrinkled. I feel rather lethargic, but push for a one hour walk every day before breakfast. My appetite, taste and pleasure from eating food are all rather poor. The usual weight loss has occurred, but I feel as though I am stabilizing at 77kg, down about 10kg from pre surgery peak. This all leaves about seven weeks of chemo to go.
Thanks to all for their support and encouragement, especially cousin Brenda Pavlou in England.
A blog of my encounter firstly with gastro oesophageal cancer and later with cancer at the pyloric end of the stomach. Blog started 13 October 2007.
