message from Lynne
Day 1 in ICU was forgettable - noisy, difficult to get pain management appropriate, and no sleep day or night for Peter.
Day 2 was sooo much better! First walk with hesitant steps with the physio on one side and a wardsman on the other, and all the equipment rattling along at the same pace. A foot and leg massage for Peter's feet and legs from me, as they were freezing, but then warmed up later. Like all patients, he hates the tight white hospital stockings, worn to avoid blood clots. The morphine pain regime has been sorted out and keeping pain low most of the time; however it moves in with movement, coughing, etc. Breathing exercises underway hourly, plus coughing, and some mucuous that needs to be cleared and dislodged.
The afternoon brought a journey floating/jolting via hospital bed to a ward. Peter was helped to settle in by friend Julie, a nurse at the hospital, who has just completed her midwifery qualifications, and has worked on the ward previously, plus ward staff. Hopefully, he will catch some sleep tonight, as he is very sleep deprived.
Its no food or drink while Peter's body heals. Monday Peter is booked for an xray procedure called a barium swallow, and will swallow a solution which will show up on xrays. This will reveal if surgery has been successful. If so, fluids will be tried, and later jelly, soups, and so on.
Peter is in good spirits, and the staff are pleased with the progress he is making. Thanks for support from all friends and family.

It was fantastic to read about the op and Peter's progress. Best wishes for his recovery and for Jeremy's wedding! Rachel x
